Are you going to bed with this
every night?
Research in Australia and worldwide has shown that up to 85% of
people with asthma have an allergy to the house dust mite. This
allergy can play an important role in the development of asthma
and in the severity of asthma symptoms. Allergic rhintis and eczema
have also been shown to be triggered by the house dust mite and
the allergens that it produces.
The most common house dust mite in Australia is
the Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus. These mites are microscopic;
so small in fact that 50 of them can fit on the head of a pin.
Dust mites live on a diet of skin scales which
we, and our pets, shed daily. They are found in every home in the
dust that accumulates in our bedding and carpets. Up to 2,000,000
mites can live in a mattress and 200,000 mites can live in a square
metre of your carpet.
Dust mites can produce up to 50 faecal pellets
a day and it is these droppings that people become most allergic
to. |

Dust Mite Allergy Symptoms
When dust is disturbed, for example when we roll
over in bed at night, fine particles of the dust mite and their
droppings are breathed in, triggering an allergy response.
Common dust mite allergy symptoms include:
- coughing, especially
in bed at night
- wheezing or a tight
chest when dust has been disturbed
- sneezing or sinus symptoms
related to sleeping
